Tips on tree pruning in Columbus Ohio

Proper tree pruning is a necessary investment for any one who owns trees and desires a safe, healthy landscape. Issues such as promoting good tree structure and encouraging tree growth in the proper direction should be addressed every 2 years. Removing storm damage and deadwood from your trees canopy should be done as needed.

Storm damage and deadwood in trees represent obvious hazards. They must be removed in order to allow the tree to properly heal. Not to mention that it is far better to have a broken or dead limb removed from the tree canopy under controlled circumstance rather than having it fall onto property or people.

Tree Pruning can be a stressful thing. Anytime leaf area is removed the tree looses some of its ability to produce food. Therefore it is quite important to make sure that every cut has a justifiable reason.

Remember typical good cuts are limbs that are crossing one another, deadwood, broken limbs, limbs interfering with a home, utilities and other structures or strategic cuts to thin a canopy.

Do’s and Don’ts about tree planting in Columbus Ohio
  • Do make sure to dig the proper size hole. Make sure of proper depth by measuring the root ball or container depth from the ground to the trees root collar. Then lay your shovel handle across the hole measure to the bottom. Better to be slightly shallow than to deep.
  • Do not pile mulch up against the trunk of your new tree. Rather taper it off so that the root flare is still above the mulch.
  • Do cut off as much of the burlap and basket as possible once the tree is in the hole.
  • Do not heavily stake your new tree up. A tree will likely develop roots faster if it must steady its self . Only if the tree begins to lean should staking be introduced.
  • Do keep planting trees!

Why choose native tree species for your new tree planting?

Trees that were present in Central Ohio before European settlers arrived are generally considered native. Many native tree species have horticultural interest during more than one season, provide food and habitat for native wildlife year round and in general, require less maintenance than non native trees and shrubs.

Native tree and shrubs developed here over centuries, experiencing the same or similar soil and weather conditions. Exotic trees and shrubs brought from other regions sometimes require more inputs from care takers to simulate the environment they developed in. Usually a tree or shrub is labeled as native or naturalized in the nursery but if you can not find this information, try searching the internet using the tree or shrubs Latin name.

Using Native plants is one step toward better thinking that will allow us to reduce our impact on the world around us!

How do I water and mulch my trees correctly?

During times of hot, dry weather, even mature trees and shrubs need supplemental water. Trees and shrubs rely on water in the soil for more than just the cooling effects of transpiration through their tissues. Water is necessary to mobilize essential minerals for life. Macro and micronutrients alike are absorbed through tree and shrub root tissue only when they are dissolved in water. Adequate water helps ensure delivery of water soluble nutrients to all tissues in the tree.

Consider how an organic mulch layer over a trees root zone helps to reduce stress by simulating the native forest floor.

  • Mulch shelters soil surface from intense sun
  • Mulch provides shelter for eath worms and other organizms that help aerate the soil
  • Mulch reduces competition from turf grass and other plants that take up limied minerals and water

Establishing a mulch layer over the trees root zone in conjunction with regular watering in times of drought is a great step toward reducing stress on your trees and shrubs. Keeping trees healthy and vigorous will reduce the likely hood of many pest problems that target weakened plants.

Creating a mulch area over the root zone of your trees is a good weekend project. If time is short, be in touch– we have advice on tree watering, and the know how to properly install a mulch area that will be beneficial to your trees.

Thank you very much for your timely response to my situation. It was devistating to see that beautiful old spruce tree down. By the time I got home from school, you had taken care of it and I could hardly tell you had been there. Hardly a drop of debris was to [be] found! It is so nice to work with such reliable people.

We are very happy with the recent pruning and trimming of our trees! I especially appreciated the personalized attention to our red maple and the large pine. We no longer worry about the branches on the house and do not have to dodge the large clumps of seeds from the front trees! We also appreciated the way your staff cleaned up and even "blew" off the drive way. They were courteous and you all listened patiently to our concerns. Thanks again for your work. I am certain we will call on you again in the future and will recommend your work.
